Art Galleries to Visit on Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is a hidden gem of Florida with something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re looking to dip your toes in the white sand of the Gulf of Mexico, indulge in some of the freshest seafood around, or browse the local shops and boutiques, you’ll find it all just minutes away from your rental. Groups of all sizes and interests find something to enjoy on Anna Maria Island, but you won’t have to deal with the large crowds of bigger Florida cities like Orlando and Tampa. It’s truly a vacation destination where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

One of the most unique features of Anna Maria Island is the various art galleries. Visiting an art gallery on your getaway is the perfect way to put a little culture into your itinerary or escape the summer heat or an afternoon shower. Even if you don’t consider yourself an art fan, there is sure to be something that will appeal to you, and the local artisans are more than happy to talk with you about their work. Here are a few of the most popular art galleries on the island, all just moments away from our Anna Maria rentals.

Island Gallery West

Island Gallery West features a combination of artwork by local and regional artists, providing a variety of pieces including paintings, stained glass, pottery, mixed media, photography, and even jewelry. The gallery has been in operation for almost 30 years and has continually brought visitors from far and wide to witness the beauty of Floridian art.

The idea for Island Gallery West began in April 1990 from artist James Pay. Along with multiple other local artists, Pay was able to open the gallery and keep it successful until April 2003, when the gallery was damaged by a fire at an adjacent restaurant. The artists were able to repair the gallery in just under a month, and it has remained an Anna Maria staple to this day.

Every month, a different artist’s work is featured, so you can see a new exhibit every time you visit! The two exhibit areas are open for you to explore and gaze at the unique pieces. The gallery is staffed 6 days a week, and the member artists will be happy to discuss the pieces with you. There are no paid employees at Island Gallery West; rather, current members jury new applicants to be welcomed into the cooperative, and each new member staffs the gallery once a month. No matter when you visit, you can rest assured that you will meet with a professional artist who is knowledgeable on the medium you are witnessing.

Island Gallery West is located at 5368 Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach. Their hours vary seasonally, so please contact Island Gallery West for more information on their hours during your stay.
