Is Anna Maria Island Dog Friendly?

Anna Maria Island is a lovely place to take your family. You can visit some of the area’s top attractions, like the Anna Maria Island City Pier, the old jail at the Anna Maria Island Historical Museum, or the Island Players Theatre.

The island has a very laid-back and relaxed energy. Unlike other vacation destinations, you are unlikely to end up rushing through traffic from one location to another. Here, you can soak in the pretty sights and go at your own comfortable and relaxing speed. Hit one beach after another, all day and all night long.

While you are at it, stay at one of our Anna Maria Island vacation rentals. With the right attitude, you never have to leave the beachfront porch.

Of course, some excited travelers want to bring an extra family member along- and we aren’t talking grandma. Anna Maria Island may have lots of things to see and do, but is it dog friendly?

Pet Friendly Places to Stay Anna Maria

Places to Take Your Dog

Firstly, dogs are not allowed on the beaches in Anna Maria Island. Now this may seem like the island is not dog friendly, but there are actually plenty of places to take your pup for the afternoon.

Perhaps the best spot for the whole family is Holmes Beach. There is a dedicated area at Holmes Beach for off-leash dogs. It is called the Paw Playground, and pups and pup-owners alike can frolick, play, and run around on their own accord.

Holmes Beach has a boardwalk area where dogs are allowed, but they must be on a leash at all times.

The second main area to take your furry friend is Robinson Preserve. This 679-acre preserve, just a short drive off the island, is a grand place to take the family. Filled with numerous walking trails, elevated nicely above the foliage, you can see rare wildlife and fascinating wetlands.

There are also many majestic water views as you peruse the preserve.

Your dog is allowed in almost all parts of Robinson Preserve, but she must be on a leash. Robinson Preserve is open dawn to dusk.

You can take your dogs anywhere on the island sidewalks as long as they are properly leashed. You can very easily see the sights and explore the island at your own pace with your most loyal friend in tow.

Doggy Dining

For the most part, if the restaurant has a patio, dogs are welcome. The only well-known exception to this rule is the Sandbar Restaurant. The restaurant actually sits out on the sands of the beach, which is an area where dogs are not allowed due to city policy.

Joe’s Eats and Sweets is a bold and funky ice cream shop, covered in fanciful colors and eccentric art. It also has a fun-loving front patio, open for dogs and people alike.

Bridge Street Bistro is in the heart of AMI’s downtown, and has a nice enclosed patio space on a popular intersection. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon.

The Waterfront Restaurant is one of the best dog-friendly locations with a stunning water view. Bring your pup along to appreciate the beaches from afar, while enjoying happy hour drinks and seafood from the outdoor patio.
