The location is hard to beat. Often, places to stay on Anna Maria Island are mere steps away from white sandy beaches and beautiful blue ocean waves.

However, sometimes you want to have a small getaway within your vacation trip. That’s why the location of Anna Maria Island is perfect. Not only are there several distinct areas within the island, but also the city of Sarasota is just a short drive away, making it the perfect day trip for your vacation.

Even though the state of Florida can seem very big on its own, don’t let it fool you. It’s very easy to travel to some of the cities in this area of the state. So fill up the tank, grab your map or GPS, and get ready to explore nearby Sarasota.

Anna Maria Island places to stay can seem like they are far from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities, but Sarasota is just a quick drive away. Don’t let the perceived distance stop you from checking out all Sarasota has to offer.

The heart of Sarasota is about 40 minutes southwest of Anna Maria Island and it will take you no time at all to plan a trip to check it out. Of course, there are a few different ways you can get there, so you’ll have to do some planning and decide what works best.

Sarasota is about only a 20 miles drive from Anna Maria Island, taking you anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

When you arrived at your Anna Maria Island vacation you most likely flew into the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport.

Traveling to and from Sarasota

Chances are when you arrived to your Anna Maria Island vacation you flew into the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. So, you probably have a decent idea of how far it is away from Anna Maria Island. But, going into the city for fun is a lot different than traveling to and from the airport.

Downtown Sarasota is more southerly than the airport, but the roads to get there are simple. There are three main ways you can travel from places to stay on Anna Maria Island to Sarasota.

If you’re staying in the City of Anna Maria or in Holmes Beach, it can make the most sent to take Rt-64 west off the island and connect with US-301. Take that highway due south and soon you’ll find yourself in Sarasota proper.

Another option from that direction is to still follow Rt-64 west off of the island, but take a turn south a little bit sooner to take US-41 south to Sarasota. This option can take a little bit longer than the first option sometimes, but can also be more fun. This highway runs near to the coast at points and can give some great views if you’re looking for a more leisurely travel option.

Finally, if you’d like to take the long way, or if you’re staying more towards the Bradenton Beach section of Anna Maria Island, this may be the best route for you. Rt-789 is the main road running through Anna Maria Island and also connects it to Longboat Key and St. Armands. You can take this route south until it ends and just west right into Sarasota. This is probably the most scenic choice of the three, but also takes a few more minutes.
